  Japan, US to discuss Japan's host nation support Japan and the United States will hold talks this week on Japan's host nation support for US military forces. Assistant Secretary of State Andrew Shapiro is leading a delegation that will carry out 3 days of discussions in Tokyo, starting Thursday. The US State Department says "Host Nation Support" is an important measure of Japan's commitment to promoting regional security in partnership with the United States. Under a bilateral accord, Japan has shouldered the cost of utilities, wages of Japanese employees at US bases in Japan, and other expenses. Japan has budgeted more than 360-billion yen, or over 4-billion dollars, for the current fiscal year. The Japanese government plans to earmark similar items in next year's budget, but is expected to negotiate for a smaller allocation to base-hosting support, as the nation faces a tight fiscal situation.
